A new term I’ve learned this week is folksonomy. Folksonomy is the blending of the word folks and taxonomy. According to an article from the New York Times, the name folksonomy (a people’s taxonomy) was coined by Thomas Vander Wal, an Internet developer and information architect. I love the Dewey Decimal System. Memorizing the genus and species (Binomial Nomenclature, the two-part Latin naming system for living things) is one of my secret nerdy vices. As someone with a nature-smart learning style, I am compelled to sort, organize, and group everything I come across. Folksonomy is essentially an online version of my compulsion. As I graze information online I can tag, share, bookmark, and sort ideas and websites for my own use and for the benefit of others with my interests. Some websites that help me to tag and sort information are del.icio.us and twitter.
